Periodontitis is the most common non-communicable disease in humans, caused by a destructive interaction between a dysbiotic biofilm and a dysregulated host immune-inflammatory response, leading to tooth loss and independently associated with premature mortality. Importantly, the detrimental effects – both in the oral cavity and systemically - are especially critical in patients with rapidly progressing variants of the disease. Periodontitis is per se relatively easy and predictable to treat. The real challenge, however, is to detect/predict those patients with rapidly progressing disease before permanent damage occurs. There are currently no generally accepted early diagnostic tools available to address this challenge.  

In this session, the speaker will present the latest insights into the specific roles of the host and/or the microbiota in driving periodontal disease progression, using whole-tissue and spatial approaches.

The learning objectives will be (1) to understand the need for patient stratification according to risk and early detection of rapidly progressing periodontitis cases; (2) to learn about contemporary methods to characterise host and microbial activity down to a single-cell/spatial level; (3) to understand the specific role of the immune system in periodontitis.
